The 1970s were particularly fertile for all these unique ingredients. Police detectives, Westerns, horror based on classic plots and joyful melodramas were in vogue then. In these genres, too, there were excellent successes, but masterpieces of other themes began to appear as well.

The Godfather (1972)

A crime story-saga about the Sicilian Corleone Mafia family based on the famous novel by Mario Puzo. The action takes place in 1945-1955. The head of the family, Don Vito Corleone, is no longer young and is gradually giving up his position in the criminal world. He is not as influential as he used to be, which only benefits his rivals. Don Corleone is forced to pass all his business to his beloved son Michael, the pride of the family and a war hero, who at first is not eager to take the brutal family business into his own hands.

The Affair (1973)

Young Johnny Hooker and his older partner Luther Coleman are two con man friends making their way through the streets of suburban Chicago. One day they steal from a courier working for a big mafioso, but they have no idea what they are mixed up in. The mobster could not forgive them, found them out and killed Coleman, and Johnnie managed to escape. Determined to avenge his partner’s death, Johnny goes to the experienced con man Henry Gondorff.

Chinatown (1974)

Jake Gittes is a Los Angeles private investigator who makes his living by exposing family cheating. One day he is approached by a woman calling herself Evelyn Mulray, she suspects her husband of cheating. Mr. Mulray holds quite a high position in Los Angeles, he is an engineer in charge of the city’s water supply. Gittes confirms the woman’s suspicions and photographs her husband with his young mistress.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)

Criminal Randle McMurphy is transferred from his prison cell to a psychiatric clinic for evaluation, where he encounters cruel rules and does not understand why patients are treated this way. But Randle learns the horrible thing about the fact that he might be left in the clinic for a long time, so he decides to escape.
